Chinese New Year

Over the last two weeks, the Puffins and Sparrows have been learning about China and Chinese New Year. We started our topic with the story ‘The Chinese New Year Race.’ We learnt about how people might celebrate Chinese New Year and compared it to our own celebrations. After this, we had a lot of fun taking part in some traditional ways to celebrate the new year by making our own money packets, writing our own Chinese New Year blessings, putting up decorations and sweeping all of the bad luck away in Spuffin Cottage.

The Puffins and Sparrows have also been busy making dragon masks, concertina dragons, lanterns and taking part in a ‘Chopstick Challenge’ where we had a minute to use chopsticks to move as many pompoms as we could.

We finished our topic with our very own Chinese New Year parade where all of the Puffins and Sparrows had the opportunity to take part in the dragon dance and play instruments. After this, we tasted some Chinese food and sung a special new year song called ‘Gung Hay Fat Choy.’ Take a look at our graph to see what the most popular Chinese food was!
